Arepas are a common food in Venezuela. They are often eaten for breakfast but are enjoyed all the time. They can be eaten plain as a bread with a meal, or they are cut and filled with numerous fillings. Shredded beef and tuna salad are common, as well are the simpler beans and cheese. Their versatility and ease of preparation makes them a great addition to our recipe books!

Recipe

1 Cup of Masa Arepa (like Doñarepa or PAN)
1 Cup of water
Salt to taste
1 Tablespoon of butter if desired

Mix all the ingredients together until a soft dough forms together in the bowl.

Let the dough sit for about 3 minutes to make softer arepas.

Form the dough into balls and then flatten a little (don’t make them too flat like I did!)

Grill (or you can fry them in oil) until both sides are crusty.

Fill with you favorite fillings and enjoy!
